[ RG-004 ]* 1983 Egypt C Cleopatra PR69DCAM { PCGS-5 }. The Queen of Egypt appears with her signature Nekhbet vulture headdress in profile presenting a regal image against expansive open fields in a design originally created in 1984 The Franklin Mint. Reigning during the time before Christ in the age of Julius Caesar and Mark Anthony, Both silver and gold (£50) coins were struck, minting 10,000 of this silver beauty. Still, this ¾-ounce pure silver gem perfectly captures the image of Cleopatra that we all share. The wings of the vulture drape down either side protecting the pharaoh. On the reverse the elegant design features the date and denomination in stylized Latin and Arabic text. This image is quite striking two-millennium later, in retrospect its somewhat unsettling pondering the coolness of sporting a dead bird carcass on your head. I’m just saying…
* Number 4 in Ron Guth’s book “100 Greatest Women on Coins” shows the smaller 1993 ₤50.
