To commemorate the centennial of America’s involvement in World War I and honor the more than 4 million men and women from the United States who served, this dollar depicts the "Soldier's Charge" where an infantryman would emerge from the trenches with his stone-like grip on his rifle. Barbed wire twines in the lower right hand side of the design offer only one of the obstacles these men would face and endure. "Poppies in the Wire" are shown on the reverse side.
