The U.S. Mint introduced the 1 Ounce 2010 Proof Platinum coins on August 12, 2010 at 12:00 p.m. (E.T.).
In 2010, the Mint only produced a 1 Ounce Proof Platinum coin and did not produce any Fractional Proof Platinum coins. The maximum authorized mintage was set at 10,000 coins total. There was also a 5 coin per household ordering limit. The previous year, the maximum authorized mintage for the 1 Ounce 2009 Proof coins was set at 8,000 coins and all coins sold out in about a week.
The new 2010 Platinum Reverse design is the second out of six different designs being issued in the, Preamble Series. The Preamble Series was introduced in 2009 and will end in 2014. The 2010 design has the theme, To Establish Justice, which is the second principle found in the Preamble.
Obverse: The obverse of the 1 Ounce 2010 Proof Platinum coin illustrates the same Liberty design used on all Platinum coins from 1997 to date.
Reverse: The reverse design of the 1 Ounce 2010 Proof Platinum coin illustrates a blind folded justice (symbolizing impartiality), holding traditional scales and carrying a branch of laurel. Towards the top of the reverse design are the words “Justice the Guardian of Liberty,” towards the bottom of the design are the words, “United States of America. The reverse design also has the inscriptions, “$100 .9995 Platinum 1oz.” and the “W” mint mark.
Issue Price: The original Mint issue price was set at $1,892.00 for each coin.
