The 2009 Braille Silver Dollars celebrate the 200th Anniversary of Louis Braille. Louis Braille invented the Braille System which is used by the blind and the visually impaired for reading and writing.

The U.S. Mint offered the coins to the public beginning on March 26, 2009. The Mint offered both an uncirculated and proof version of this design. The pre-ordering price was set at $37.95 for the proof version, the pre-issue price was honored until April 27, 2009.

Regular ordering prices were then restructured after April 27, 2009 and the regular price was now set at $41.95 for each proof coin.

The Braille Commemorative Silver Dollars are the first coins ever struck by the U.S. Mint with the Braille characters. The reverse design has several dots which spell "Brl" or the contraction of Braille.

The maximum authorized mintage was set at 400,000 for both uncirculated and proof versions combined.
