This is the first year in which the Mint struck Special Satin Finish Kennedy Half Dollars. Satin Finish coins have a different finish than Mint State and Proof coins. The Satin Finish coins are struck under extreme care and precision, a similar method used to strike Proof coins. However, the Satin Finish coins look very similar to Mint State coins with the main difference being that the majority of Satin Finish coins are of greater quality than Mint State coins.

The 2005-P Satin Finish Kennedy Half Dollars were sold to the public by the U.S. Mint in Special 2005 Mint Sets. The set included 22 coins all displaying a Satin Finish format.
