2002 Liberia $1 Carl Friedrich Gauss PR67DCAM { PCGS-5 }. Johann Carl Friedrich Gauss was a German mathematician and physicist who made significant contributions to many fields in mathematics and science, and even lent his name to a unit of measure for magnetic induction. I recall seeing this denomination in circulation in Germany in the early 1960's, at the time worth $12.50. An interesting time when there weren't daily, weekly or even monthly changes in the exchange rates of the major world currencies, and the dollar was backed by silver. It was east to do conversions even for me as a second grader: one US Dollar = 4 Deutsche Marks. This is from the series of coins bidding farewell to European currencies with the adoption of the standardized Euro. This was from the standard set of banknotes in circulation during an approximate 20 year period, and are joined in remembrance on this African country's exonumia by a commemorative paying tribute to artists and musicians issued just one year, and reprised in one additional year. One design selected for an official Liberian coin was the Clara Schumann 100 DM banknote.
