The 1989-S Congress Dollar was produced to commemorate the bicentennial of the United States Congress.
Obverse: Depicts the Statue of Freedom which is located on top of the Capitol Dome. Below the Statue are the words In God We Trust and Liberty. To the right of the Statue is the date 1789, the first year in which the Federal Congress was formed. To the right is the date 1989, the date in which the coin was released to the public. Below the date is the D mint mark, indicating that the coins were produced at the Denver Mint. Arched above the Statue of Freedom are the words Bicentennial of the Congress.
Reverse: The words United States of America are arched above the Capitol Dome. Encircled around the Capital Dome are 13 stars. The letters WW below the right side of the Capitol Dome are the initials of William Woodward. The letters EZS on the left hand side of the Dome are the initials of Edgar Z. Steever IV. The denomination of the coin Half Dollar, is spelled out towards the lower central portion of the coins design.
Overview: Mint pre-issue price for the 1989-S Congress Proof Half Dollar was $7. Mint regular issue price was $8. Produced under Public Law 100-673.
The Mint also produced a 1989-D Uncirculated Congress half dollar. Additionally, it also produced proof and mint state $5 gold coins commemorating the bicentennial of Congress.
