From an overall mintage of 3,677,175 proofs, it is estimated that 400,000 to 500,000 of these carry the Type 2 or clear mint mark. A small portion of 1979-S Susan B. Anthony dollars have this elusive clear S mintmark. The original die, which created a filled S, was re-cut later in 1979, producing this low-mintage scarcity. These proofs were not issued separately, but only as part of that year's 5-coin proof set, making them a tough find individually.
