The 1897 "1 in Neck" variety is one of a surprisingly large number of what are known as Mis-Placed Dates (or MPDs), coins where portions of the date are visible in unusual areas.  These where caused when the engraver dropped the date logotype accidentally onto a die face, impressing portions of the date into the die.  When possible, these mistakes are effaced from the dies, but in some cases, they cannot be removed.  In this case, the serif of a 1 protrudes from the Indian princesses neck, just above the beaded necklace.

According to Fivaz-Stanton, this variety is "easy to locate in lower grades" but Mint State examples are "very hard to locate." PCGS (as of August 2011) has certified 66 examples in all grades, including 19 in Mint State.  The finest Red-Brown examples certified by PCGS are a pair of MS565 RBs.
