1878 VAM 224 has 168 reeds on the edge, much fewer than normal.  When comparing the edge to other 1878 Silver Dollars, the edge reeding will appear narrower and closer.  Another way to attribute this variety, without having to count the edge reeding, is to look for the die scratches as indicated in the image above.
