The 1864-S Quarter Dollar is a nice, Civil War era rarity with a small mintage of only 20,000 coins. In fact, this date has the smallest mintage of any Seated Liberty Quarter from the San Francisco Mint. Naturally, this date is rare and difficult to obtain in virtually all grades. The images above give some indication of what is available to collectors -- very few examples, most of which are in low grade. Mint State examples are exceedingly rare, led by the remarkable NGC MS68 from the celebrated Eliasberg Collection. It is difficult to tell what nice examples are supposed to look like, as so few are available, but observing the Eliasberg example, we note weakness on most of the stars on the right side of the obverse and just a bit of softness on the eagle's right (viewer's left) leg feathers, and possibly the mintmark.
