BG-1301 is one of several fractional gold coins made by Herman Kroll sometime in the early 1900s.  Kroll operated out of New York, where these were likely struck.  No BG-1301s were made in California, nor did they ever circulate there, and they were made decades after the date on the coin.  Nonetheless, BG-1301 remains popular with collectors due to its addition to the Breen-Gillio numbering system.  260 of them where discovered in 1923 as part of Kroll's estate after his death; they have all been widely dispersed.  The original dies for this variety existed in 1968 and were later used to create restrikes (see BG-1301A).  The "originals" are made of low-purity, red gold while the restrikes are a higher-purity, bright yellow gold.
