The Newcomb 9 (N-9) variety of 1819 Large Cents is very common thanks to the discovery of the Randall Hoard in the 1860's. The hoard consisted of hundreds of Uncirculated Large Cents, all of which have been dispersed over the ensuing century and a half. Even today, 1819 N-9's shows up at auction frequently and can be found with ease in grades up to MS64. Many of the survivors show some of their original red color in varying degrees. PCGS has not yet graded a full Red 1819 N-9 and it is doubtful if one exists. Like most coins from the Randall Hoard, the 1819 N-9's come with carbon spots, but they are usually minor compared to some of the other dates from the hoard. Early states of this die show full, sharp details, but as the die wore, the details become mushy and soft (this can be seen on the stars and the denticles).
