1795 BB-21, B-1, R-2. Head of '95. Liberty's lowest curl is nearly closed & touches a point of Star 1. The rev. has 19 berries, 9 on the left branch of the wreath, 10 on the right, with 3 berries beneath the eagle's left wing & 4 beneath the right. The die engraver entered the date as 1195, then corrected it with a 7. The 1 can still be seen to the left of the 7. Both surfaces show good luster beneath an elusive tone of pale lilac, blue & shades of gold. The rev. has some adjustment marks that brought the planchet to it's proper weight.

1795 Flowing Hair Silver Dollars are known in two different major varieties: 2 Leaves and 3 Leaves.  To determine the variety, simply look at the leaf clusters beneath the eagle's wings -- the clusters will contain either two or three leaves.

In terms of relative rarity, the 2 Leaves variety is approximately three times as rare as the 3 Leaves variety.  Mint State examples of both major varieties are rare and valuable.  Surprisingly, the PCGS Condition Census is comprised entirely PCGS MS64 and better examples.  The best examples are a pair of PCGS MS65s

Bruce Morelan, in an interview with PCGS in 2016, spoke about this example: “I saw this coin at one of the ANA shows in the mid-2000s. Chris Napolitano showed it to Laura [Sperber] and I in a higher graded holder at the time. It just displayed such beautiful luster, full cartwheel, original golden toning. Everything about the coin I absolutely loved. And once I started building this set, it was the coin that kept popping into my mind as the representative that I wanted of this date, in my set. And I was looking for it, trying to find it, for sale in its previous holder, and eventually it walked up to Legend's table in the new holder, the 64+ holder, and I couldn't buy it fast enough.”
