"Superb Braided Hair Type, Hammered Strike, Steely Fields, Center Brown, Peripheral Orange . The Braided Hair half cent design was employed from 1849 through the end of the denomination's issuance. Mintages dropped notably in 1854 with only 55,358 struck that year. Cohen-1 is the single die pairing. Gem examples are very scarce with MS66 Brown and Red-Brown being very rare. This superb example is only one of five at the MS65+ level for both coloring certifications. A superb type piece with original brown and orange coloration along with a very sharp strike. One of the CoinFacts plates coins and ex. DL Hansen Collection. Housed in normal PCGS Gen 6.1 (2020-2022) holder with CAC approval.", as described by the seller.

Lovely proof coin with charming original toning and spectacular provenance: I acquired it from Goldcoast Coin Exchange in 2021. It had previously been part of the Teich Family collection, where it had been purchased during the November 1957 auction of The Empire Collection United States Silver and Copper Coins at Stack's in New York City for a bid of $52. It is listed as being in 'Brilliant proof' condition under item #1540 on page 89 of the original auction catalogue, Per the catalogue, the Empire Collection was 'Assembled by a renowned numismatist [and] begun in 1886. However, the modesty of the gentleman preclude[d] the use of his name in connection with it.'

Although the 1880 s Morgan dollar is a generally available date for type collectors, pieces in this condition are legitimately rare, while the wonderful toning further enhances the coin's uniqueness and appeal.

This perfectly imperfect PCGS uncirculated 1922 peace dollar holds a special place in my collection, as it was the very first holdered coin I ever acquired, back in 1991. I remember cobbling together $27 to order it sight unseen from a mail-in catalogue, which offered a choice of peace dollars graded MS61 and higher. The MS63's were too expensive for me, so I settled on an MS62. When it finally arrived, after weeks of anticipation, I opened the package to reveal a coin that only a mother would love - the obverse was covered in an unsightly tan-brown residue obscuring the details of the device. Some thirty-four years later I would resubmit the coin to PCGS, where it was lovingly restored to a lustrous, mostly residue-free state.
Superb luster and a frosty reverse device adorns this common date high grade Peace dollar. Some small contact marks and a bit of toning likely preclude it from a higher grade.

This stunning high grade registry quality circulation issue features a gorgeous frosted patina on its obverse device set against a strong cartwheel in the background fields. I recall the seller relaying his sentimental attachment to the coin, as it came from his personal collection. I reassured him that it could not possibly be going to a more loving home.

1820 Matron Head Cent. N-13. Rarity-1. Large Date. MS-65+ BN (PCGS). From the Stacks Bowers lot description at its March 2021 Auction (Session 1 - Numismatic Americana, Early American Coins & U.S. Coins), where it sold (Presumably to my seller) for $2,100: 'Highly lustrous and unabraded surfaces retain about a third of their original mint red. Lightly toned to a bluish steel-brown elsewhere creating a lovely patina and choice overall appearance. Satiny with hardly any marks to disturb this delicate texture. We'll note faint traces of an old fingerprint over the hair bun and at the lower left wreath, but this is not of much concern. Displays an exacting strike on the devices and only slight weakness on a few of the star lines. The characteristic die crack is seen encircling the stars and date. A beautiful Gem for a high-end date or type set. Provenance: From our (Bowers & Ruddy's) Wilfred E. Helwig sale, February 1979, lot 1557.'

"Gem original, frosted luster, peripheral toning, hammered strike. Whether building a Seated half dime date and mintmark set or looking for a premium type coin, this lovely 1850 Philly strike warrants consideration. Most impressive is the hammered strike along with peripheral toning on both sides. A nicely frosted and lustrous example as illustrated. Die variety specialists may wish to pay attention to the lower to middle obverse rim and the die spurs protruding from the denticles. Accurately graded and housed in newer NGC holder with edge view inset." as described by the seller.

This gorgeous flowing hair dollar coin boasts a rich warm palate of tan, brown and steel colors. Adding to its charm, two names are ever-so-faintly etched in the obverse fields on either side of the device, for which it was assigned a details grade. When and why these names were inscribed, and to whom they pertain, is a mystery.
