Great looking coin in hand, as nice as a few 66's I own, however I think the die polish lines on the Obv may have held it back. Older holder....
When researching 1895 Barber Dimes you'll notice one standout MS68 graded by NGC and sold by Heritage back in 2007 for $37,375. With a bit of sleuthing, you can find the coin had been cracked out of an early blue PCGS MS67 holder that sold on Heritage for $46,000, back in 2005. When there were only two MS67 examples of this date known which both appeared in that same sale. the blast white example only netting $29,900 Now that the coin is in a PCGS MS67+CAC, I wonder if it would grade 68 again at NGC.
The plate coin in David Bowers' Guide Book of Barber Silver Coins (2015), where the 1898-O is called "one of the handful of top rarities among Barber dimes grading MS-60 or higher."
Notes from Legend 12/18/2014 This is one of the highlights of The Simpson Barber Dime Collection. Only a single Mint made die line holds this back from a lofty MS68 designation. The clean surfaces have a thick, satiny texture, while a superior luster shows off wonderful russet/gold/green/blue colors. Unlike a typical O Mint this coin displays all its features with razor sharp accuracy. The eye appeal is tremendous!
