On the obverse is the sole chopmark 白 (bái) which translates to "white" in English. It is also sometimes used as a surname and can also mean snowy, pure, bright, clear and to make clear. While this is a Details Grade the Non Details Grade Total Population is 11. This is one of those coins that you will not see on the market for years and when it shows up you buy it.
The 1873-Philadelphia is an extremely difficult Trade Dollars to find chop marked with a straight grade, My prior placeholder was a PCGS Details Grade that I was thankful to have even found. On the obverse are two carefully placed chops one of which is the character 大 ( dà - dài ) translated as big. Population Total 11, Higher 3, Lower 5. This coin passed through a prominent Trade Dollar collector and. I am very happy to have it leading off my modest collection having obtained same at a recent auction. Ex DDR
The 1873-Carson City Trade Dollar is another extremely difficult chop mark to obtain requiring much patience to find one. The character 大 ( dà - dài ) on the obverse is translated as big. While this is a Details Grade that I am extremely happy with for its condition, the Non Details Grade Total Population is 18.
The 1873-Carson City Trade Dollar is another extremely difficult chop mark Trade Dollar to obtain requiring much patience to find one. While this is a Non Details Grade I prefer the Details Grade coin in my main set. Total Population is 18 with only 8 in a higher grade.
On the reverse is the chopmark 子(zi) meaning offspring, child, son, daughter; first of twelve earth branches (†_*): rat or mouse (EEl) of Chinese zodiac; or master, Not the easiest coin to find but obtained on eBay. This Trade Dollar had a horrible “slab view” for a Trueview that was remedied by reholdering.
The character 大 ( dà - dài ) on the obverse is translated as big and appears to be a very popular chopmark for the year 1873 regardless of mint. On the reverse is a recessed chopmark 王 ( wáng ) meaning “king” and is also a surname. While this is a Details Grade the Non Details Grade Total Population is 47. Ex blue sofa, who obtained the coin raw and utilized the PCGS restoration program with some very nice results.
While this is a Details Grade the Non Details Grade Total Population is 49.
The 1873 S Trade Dollar with Chopmarks is scarce in any condition but in a straight grade they don’t come up very often. While I have the 1873 S in PCGS AU58 this VF30 is simply a nicer coin to my eye. This is a nice well worn Trade Dollar with all signs that it did its job well and amazingly came back to the United States.
This tough chop mark date has been written about extensively over the years given its relative scarcity compared to a plentiful mintage and remains very hard to come by. In his seminal analysis of chopmarked coins, Rose wrote that among US Trade Dollars, "on the surface, there is no reason why the '74 P should be hard to find with chopmarks, since its mintage is 987,000, but in fact it is the third toughest to locate." While this is a Details Grade the Non Details Grade Total Population is 20.

The “Readers Digest” version is 74-P is H A R D; The lesson? If an acceptable 74-P (among other dates) becomes available and you are reasonably satisfied it is “P” then get it! This tough chop mark date has been written about extensively over the years given its relative scarcity compared to a plentiful mintage and unbelievably remains very hard to come by. A nice straight graded AU50 Trade Dollar that circulated in Asia and made it back to the United States 150 years later. While 1874 CC chopmarked Trade Dollars are generally available they are usually solely in Details Grade and often in bad shape with environmental damage. The Chopmark(s) was/were placed on the thickest part of the coin making it more difficult to read and with chopmarks a Chopmark picture is not always worth a 1,000 words. With the coin in hand, a quality loop and sunshine, there is the character 升 shēng and one other chopmark. Further research needs to be performed in the archives of the Chopmark Collectors Club for the second Chopmark. Population Total 163, Higher 120, Lower 30.
A fairly common CC date with satiny skin and attractive luster. This Trade Dollar has the Chinese character 克 - kè (gram in Chinese), once on the obverse and twice on the reverse. Ex Lermish
Formerly NGC UNC Details that crossed to PCGS (my first PCGS submission) with a straight Chopmarked grade, a very attractive Trade Dollar with three obverse Chopmarks nicely positioned. While I had hoped for a higher grade in comparison to subsequent PCGS submissions I am very pleased. I personally consider this Trade Dollar to be the best in my collection. The middle chopmark is 升( shēng). Ex The Long Island Collection (via HA)
On the obverse the Chinese character "仪" (yi) can refer to several things when used in the context of instruments. The Chinese character for lucky and propitiation is 吉 (ji) is also on the obverse, It means "auspicious," "lucky," or "propi-tious." Several more of the Chopmarks I am working on going through the journals of the Chopmark Collectors Club…..a valuable resource for a niche field. While this is a Details Grade the Non Details Grade Total Population is 254.
Nice straight graded AU58 and a recent upgrade. Population Total 254, Higher 75, Lower 144. Variety with a period after FINE, thanks to the 2025 Trade Dollar book published by Joe Kirchgessner information was gleaned concerning such a variety.
A extremely nice straight graded MS63 and a recent upgrade. Population Total 254, Higher 5, Lower 235. This is the variety with a period after FINE so thanks to the 2025 Trade Dollar book published by Joe Kirchgessner this information was gleaned concerning such a variety.
An 1875-CC Type I/II and while obtainable they require a lot of effort to locate in particular with chopmarks. 1875 CC Chopmark Non Details Grade Population Total is 148 with no variety/type. Terrible Trueview so I added a photo. 1875 CC Type I/II Chopmark Non Details Grade Population Total is 4 and I intend to get the variety/type attribution with PCGS at some point.
An 1875-CC Type I/II and while obtainable they require a lot of effort to locate in particular with chopmarks and in a non details grade. A Type I/I 1875 CC Trade Dollar recently obtained from the Stacks Bowers October 2025 Hong Kong (SAR) Showcase Auction. While an excellent straight grade with only 38 graded higher one of the reasons to acquire this coin was that it had a “proper” TrueView image.
Very wholesome, well circulated Type 1/1 1875-S Trade Dollar. While chopped trade dollars are abundant at the VF-XF grades, they can be said to be somewhat scarce today in G. The two chop marks on the obverse are both "sheng" characters sometimes used to count units of dry grain and also used to mean life. Ex bluevelvetsofa
My favorite Trade Dollars is this straight graded 1875-S Type I/I with nice toning and a simple yuan (元) chop mark. The pedigree of this coin is from Blue Velvet Sofa whose wisdom led me to the Chopmark Collectors Society. Ex bluevelvetsofa
Simply a nice better grade problem free chopmark Type I/I Trade Dollar that is actually “relatively easy” to obtain for a Trade Dollar. Considered a common Trade Dollar among Trade Dollar enthusiasts with a Population Total 407, Higher 152, Lower 169.
A very scarce (Total Population 30) overmintmark variety.. Kirchgessner TDV-12 Ex Lermish
A Type I/II Trade Dollar that I was able to distinguish (obscuring chops) thanks to the 2025 book published by Joe Kirchgessner, the book is a must have for Trade Dollar collectors. Within the Carson City issues, the 76, while not quite as tough as the 73 or 77 and certainly not the 78, is much more scarce than chopped 74s and 75s. 昌 “Chang" on the obverse is translated today as "prosperous". While this is a Details Grade the Non Details Grade Total Population is 36.
On the obverse the Chinese character "仪" (yi) can refer to several things when used in the context of instruments.
Chopped example of this exceedingly scarce DDO. Challenge 50 Set: Slot 28-FS 101 DDO Right Stars (w/ clashing C-18.2), Kirchgessner TDV-28 正 “Zheng" on the reverse is translated today as "correct" or "just" and indicates the trustworthiness of the coin for commerce. 昌 on the obverse is translated meaning "flourish, prosper, good, sunlight" and is also a surname. While this is a Details Grade the Non Details Grade Total Population is 44.
This Trade Dollar had a horrible “slab view” for a Trueview that was remedied by reholdering.
Philadelphia mint trade dollars are (mostly) findable although in chopmarked condition they range from scarce (77) to extremely scarce (73,74,76) to essentially impossible (75), so this is the “common” year that in reality is actually “scarce.” The obverse contains the chopmark 巳 (Si) the sixth of the twelve Earthly Branches. Population Total 44, Higher 20 Lower 14.
An AU 53 grade 1877-CC with multiple well defined chopmarks though I do actually prefer my AU Details 1877 CC. This coin is replacing a NGC UNC Details 1877 CC which is very defaced. A more challenging date to obtain in a Trade Dollar in particular a straight grade. Non Details Grade Total Population is 54 with only 36 higher and 16 lower.
Formerly a NGC UNC Details Trade Dollar that was crossed to PCGS as AU58.
Relatively “common” 1877-S with “micro s” mintmark. On the obverse is the character 光 (guing) meaning light, brilliant, shine, beam, ray. We also have the number marking 8 which is the luckiest number in Chinese culture because its pronunciation "Ва" sounds similar to the word "fa", which means to make fortune. The number 8 is associated with wealth, prosperity, success and status and for this reason business men favor it very much. While this is a Details Grade the Non Details Grade Total Population is 353.
While 1877-S chopmark Trade Dollars are plentiful in details grades they take “patience” to obtain in a straight grade. I now need to identify at least one chop as is the goal with each acquisition.
The obverse contains the Chopmark 王 (Wang) a surname and the reverse contains the Chopmark 天 (Tian) one of the oldest Chinese terms for heaven. There is also a small drill hole a form of test mark on the reverse. One of the more “common” Chopmark Trade Dollars; Straight Grade Population Total 352, Higher 264 Lower 56.
This Trade Dollar had a horrible “slab view” for a Trueview that was remedied by reholdering.
On the reverse is the chopmark 王 ( wáng ) meaning “king” and is also a surname. While this is a Details Grade the Non Details Grade Total Population is 82. With the extreme difficulty to acquire a 1878-CC with chopmarks this Trade Dollar being my last registry entry with “wang” (King) might be just the perfect closure.
Recently acquired this Non Details upgrade; Non Details Grade Total Population is 82. In addition to a “test mark” this Trade Dollar includes the Chinese chop 吉 (Ji) meaning luck and propitiation. With the extreme difficulty to acquire a 1878-CC with chopmarks this Trade Dollar being my last registry entry with “Ji” (Lucky) might be just the perfect closure to bring good luck in filling the elusive 1878-CC chopmark slot. This Trade Dollar originally had a horrible “slab view” for a Trueview that was remedied by reholdering.
Searching for a DDR replacement with chop marks in a PCGS slab.
Type II/II; Extremely difficult to find in any condition is an understatement. Obtained on EBay slabbed unnoticed by other collectors.
Nothing spectacular about this coin but it was found on eBay from a collectors “store” and it was a bargain price considering it already had the PCGS variety attribution and as a bonus it has a great collection of nice discernible Chopmarks that should provide a great afternoon of Numismatically sleuthing.
Pleasing satiny luster rolls across even dove-gray surfaces with a faint champagne cast, delivering solid eye appeal for a chopmarked survivor that did its time overseas and lived to tell the tale. The obverse hosts a bold, well-sunk chop in the lower right field that adds character without overwhelming the design, while the reverse remains comparatively clean. Strike is better than typical, with sharp central detail and crisp rims. Scattered contact and a few light wipe lines account for the grade, but the coin sits nicely in the holder. Formerly the highest variety graded type I/II. Ex Lermish
The 1875-CC Type I/II while “obtainable” they require a lot of effort to locate in particular with chopmarks and in a straight numerical grade. Some consider this Trade Dollar variety w/chopmarks to only being slightly easier to obtain than the 1878 CC w/chopmarks. 1875 CC Type I/II Chopmark Non Details Grade Population Total is 4.
This Type II/II combination of obverse and reverse hubs is considered “scarce” for 1876-S trade dollars. Two distinct Chopmarks, the character 京 (jing) has a meaning of “capital (city).” While this is a Details Grade the Non Details Grade Total Population is 5. Ex Lermish
Straight graded but heavily chopmarked and a nice overall appearance. Tough Type II/II variety with “micro s” mintmark. While this is a Type II/II Straight Grade the Graded Total 1876-S Population is 305. Ex-Lermish
Type I/II and a super tough Philly date to find with chop marks! While this is a Details Grade the Non Details Grade Total Population is 20. Ex bluevelvetsofa (Thank you bluevelvetsofa)
Simply a nice Type I/I problem free straight grade Trade Dollar. 正 "Zheng" on the reverse is translated today as "correct" or "just" and indicates the trustworthiness Unfortunately PCGS did not have a Trueview for this coin so I did a DIY.
Clean surfaces and several well separated and defined chops. Attractive and interesting example of a very common type. Ex Lermish
A rarely seen example of this tough RPD. Kirchgessner TDV-26 Ex-Lermish
One of only several known chopped 76-P with type one obverse and reverse. Very happy to have obtained this coin with no chopmark obscurity issues in the mint mark area which is a major difficulty with Philadelphia Trade Dollars. Not having the extremely scarce 1875 (Philadelphia) Trade Dollar with chop marks in my collection, I am pleased to have had the opportunity to acquire this Trade Dollar. While this is a Details Grade the Non Details Grade 1876-Philadelphia (Type I/I, I/II, II/II) Total Population is 20. Ex-Lermish (Thank you, Lermish).
This is a not extraordinarily difficult DDR variety with doubling visible to those with high acuity eyesight, most pronounced on the 4 & 2. Kirchgessner TDV-36
This coin was at an auction from DDR and I was simply happy to obtain it having passed through that collection. Chops include 中 (zhong) and 月 (yuè). While this is a Details Grade the Non Details Grade Total Population is 7. Ex DDR.
The FS-301 RPD is a moderately difficult variety to find but becomes vanishingly scarce if looking for a non details example. An easily seen remainder of the repunched second 7 is evident. Kirchgessner TDV-32 Ex Lermish
Described by John Coxe as part of the Trade Dollar Challenge 50 Set; “ 1876-CC Small Wide cc This was the final reuse of the small, wide cc mint mark reverse used each year. As the Type I reverse was retired in after this, the die ceased to be used. This is an extremely rare find.” Having found Joe Kirchgessner”s newly published Trade Dollar text to be so invaluable, I elected to have this NGC UNC Details crossover attributed to the Kirchgessner designation TDV-21 even though the Coxe and Kirchgessner variety are one in the same. Currently there are no straight graded Trade Dollars with this variety attribution.
