1864 No L Snow-11 MS-65RB PCGS- CAC-75% RED. Fully struck with very few marks. This variety shows concentric lathe lines across the face. Although there is a spot on the reverse, it is still a very attractive coin. It is in an old green-label holder from over 15 years ago. S11 1864 No L, Lathe lines. Obv. 21: (C) Concentric circular die lines cover most of the portrait with the focus at the center of the die. Die stage A: Die striations fron 11:30 to 5:30. Dies stage B: The lathe lines are less pronounced. Rev. AT: Olive leaf and shield points well away from the denticles. This could have been an old die which was reengraved for some reason. It may have been expedient to reengrave the design directly into this working die to bring out the design. Any lines cut into the die would be very difficult to smooth out, so they were left in.

Eagle Eye Photo Seal Snow 1a 1867, 67/67 (n), reverse die crack from arrow nock. This is one of the top repunched dates in the Indian Cents series. In addition to being a bold “naked eye” variety, it is very scarce within this semi-key date year. It garners a significant premium in all grades. It is virtually unknown in full red color. Planchets used for this variety typically exhibit a streaky woodgrain toning. This woodgrain look, while not unappealing, condems the coin from the outset as never being able to be graded as a full red. The variety was first reported by Q. David Bowers in his Empire Topics (no. 5) in 1959. Initially it was believed that the repunching was done with two different digit punches - a large date over small date. However after careful study by Fly-In Club co-founder, Larry Steve and others, it was decided that the initial punching was squeezed to appear smaller by the second, stronger impression. It was also observed that the initial punching was highly skewed in relation to the plane of the die face, which is why there is not repunching visible under the 18. {65RD, 65RB, 65RB, 65RB, 65RB, 64RD}

David Bowers in his Empire Topics (no. 5) in 1959. Initially it was believed that the repunching was done with two different digit punches - a large date over small date. However after careful study by Fly-In Club co-founder, Larry Steve and others, it was decided that the initial punching was squeezed to appear smaller by the second, stronger impression. It was also observed that the initial punching was highly skewed in relation to the plane of the die face, which is why there is not repunching visible under the 18. {65RD, 65RB, 65RB, 65RB, 65RB, 64RD}
Eagle Eye Photo Seal Snow 1a 1867, 67/67 (n), reverse die crack from arrow nock. This is one of the top repunched dates in the Indian Cents series. In addition to being a bold “naked eye” variety, it is very scarce within this semi-key date year. It garners a significant premium in all grades. It is virtually unknown in full red color. Planchets used for this variety typically exhibit a streaky woodgrain toning. This woodgrain look, while not unappealing, condems the coin from the outset as never being able to be graded as a full red. The variety was first reported by Q. David Bowers in his Empire Topics (no. 5) in 1959. Initially it was believed that the repunching was done with two different digit punches - a large date over small date. 1873 Doubled Die Obverse Indian Head Cent graded VG-08 by PCGS. LIBERTY is too worn for 1873 Double LIBERTY an identification so other die identifiers were used to positively identify this variety. Identifiers include an open top on the letter 'D' in UNITED and strong doubling on the letter 'E' in STATES. There is also some doubling visible under the Indian's nose. Popular and rare variety! Scuff marks in the photo are on the plastic holder. 1873 Double LIBERTY
EX:Bryan Wagner Rare Coins 1875 Snow 15 Die lines below jaw and ear. Obv. 17: (C) Heavy parallel die file marks from 11:30 to 5:30 visible mostly below the ear and cheek. Also visible in front of the forehead, eye and ribbon. Die crack from the rim at 7:00 to the base of all the digits in the date. Rev. T3-R: Olive leaf and right shield point connected to the denticles. Left shield point away. Attributed to: Rick Snow This is similar to S6, but the die lines cover a larger area, and are at a different angle. Ordinary die striations are usually not collectable, but in cases such as this die, where the lines are deep and very obvious, the collector appeal increases.

This is a scarce issue, although a few hoards have surfaced over the years. A significant original roll was sold in Auction ‘80 for $40,000. These were all a slightly late die state with wavy fields which gives the coins a look like melted butterscotch. Sharp early die state pieces are harder to find, The premiums for the 1886 Type 2 over the Type 1 have fluctuated over the years. When a space was added to the popular coin albums in the 1980’s its popularity took off. In the late 1980’s when certified holders became the collectors choice, interest waned as the difference was not initially noted on the holders. In 1990 interest picked back up when it started to be noted on certified holders. It is typically labeld on certified holders as Variety 2. When we see variety we think of a die variety. Strictly speaking, the design change is a different type, not a different variety, In the early 2000’s with the development registry set collecting, the 1886 Type 2 was demoted to the variety set and not included in the regular date listing. This hurt its demand somewhat in the highest grades since it was now deemed not essential to competing with other registry sets. The most interesting variety is certainly the Large 6 over Small 6, S1, which can be collected in both Proof and MS format

C: Olive leaf connected to the denticles. Shield points well away from the denticles. Attributed to: Jack Beymer All examples seen to date have weakness on the first three feather tips. It seems to be due to debris filled dies, not weakness of strike. Whether this exists on all examples, it is unknown. The base of the 1 sticking out of the neck is very bold. This is a vary easy to see variety and, as such, it is one of the top varieties of the Indian cent series. Interest multiplied in 2002 when PCGS started labeling this variety on their holders as a regular date in the series. With the low reported population, it gained intense interest among regular date set collectors as one of the important dates to include in a regular set, a status only the 1867 S1, 1869 S3, 1873 Close 3 S1 and 1894 S1 share. PCGS has since deleted it from their population reports but still labels the variety. Interest has not diminished. It was assumed early on that this variety would be found in high grades due to the general availability of this date. It is very surprising that only a few MS examples have come to light and none in gem full red condition. Hill-22.
