The Hesselgesser Bust Dollar Collection is historically significant in that the quality of these first silver dollars struck by the U.S. Mint is amazing. The current collection contains 107 of the known 118 varieties, many of which are the finest known. This is notable because the variety series for early U.S. dollars is difficult to obtain in grades of Extremely Fine or higher. The Hesselgesser Collection has 82 coins in About Uncirculated grade and 12 MS coins for a total of 94 out of 107 varieties in AU or higher grades. An amazing 100 coins qualify as condition census according to the Bowers-Borckardt silver dollar book or more recent references. The originality of these coins is remarkable in toning, luster and overall eye appeal while adjustment marks are minimal.

Your comments are appreciated . The coin in question (BB1 16) was apparently stored in a newspaper and toned with the print embosed into the toning. I can read the letters when the coin is placed up to a mirror, The letters appear to be "drape", "Spec" and " turban". At the bottom on the neck the letters ST appear. This is one of my favorite coins plus being a rare BB116 in a condition censis state. RDH
This is one amazing set you have assembled. Collecting Bust Dollars in it's own right is quite an achievement, but you've decided to step it up a couple notches and collect by B & BB variety; quite the undertaking. As I write this, you only need 14 more varieties. My biggest question when looking at the pictures of your coins is this, can you explain to me what looks to be script writing on the toning of your 1798 B-30 BB-116 Large Eagle Dollar. I find this most interesting and if you've been able to decipher what it says I would be most interested in what it is it actually does say. Everything else looks exceptionally awesome and good luck with the rest of your collection. STONE
I am just a neophyte with coins having only collected simple well used items. Imagine--I have never even seen one of these except on this site in a picture. I am at the bottom, playing with Ebay, but it is fun. I hope the Dr can find the rest of this fabulous collection-it will set the standard never to be outdone. Charles Griffin.
This is an amazingly beautiful set of Flowing Hair and Draped Bust Dollars that I enjoy viewing to enjoy the true aesthetic beauty of these coins. I would love to have the opportunity to meet Dr. Hesselgesser to discuss our mutual love of Early U.S. Dollars!! I am staring out by assembling a Type Set of Early Dollars, and these photographs are excellent references of the quality coins that can be found (with lots of hard looking) in high end AU grade. Thanks to PCGS for your incredible display of my coins. I hope all numismatist can see how beautiful the FH and Bust series can be, not to mention the difficulty in finding coins that PCGS will grade. This set is currently at 101 of 118. The last 17 Varieties will take some time! RDH
