CAC. HM-2 (Dies 2-B). Rarity 4 (Pop. ~170). The only use of Obverse 2, whose date has the high 4 tallest of the digits and nearly touching the hair lock. Obverse 2 did not survive this pairing, presumably due to the near-vertical die crack visible between stars 6 and 7. Reverse B, used also for HM-4 and HM-6, is recognizable by its "broken" arrow: the shaft of the middle arrow is missing to the left of the claw. A very pleasing coin - pale greenish-gold overall with rich ochre tones over all devices and wisps of orange, red and magenta in protected areas. Purchased from Liz Coggan.
CAC. HM-3 (Dies 3-C). Rarity 2 (Pop. ~710). The Obverse 3 date is similar to Obverse 1, with tall & steep upper serif on the 1, Script 8, long center spike on the 3 and short crossbar and base on the 4. The digits, however, are much better aligned vertically. Superb for the grade with terrific eye appeal. Nearly unblemished and extensively washed with orange. Purchased from Stack's Bowers.
CAC. HM-7 (Dies 4-C). Rarity 3 (Pop. ~320). The last pairing for Obverse 4 and the second for Reverse C. Characteristic die breaks connect both wingtips with the rims, and the middle and lower arrowheads with each other. Well-struck with pleasing greenish-gold overall with some orange tones around the devices. Purchased from David Johnson at the 2023 Pittsburgh ANA.
CAC. HM-7 (Dies 4-C). Rarity 3 (Pop. ~320). A really sweet original coin. The underlying greenish-gold is extensively washed with deep orange both in the fields and on the devices. Characteristic die breaks connect both wingtips with the rims, and the middle and lower arrowheads with each other. Purchased raw from Andrew Edelman of Edelman's Coins, who correctly predicted it would grade VF35.
HM-3 (Dies 1-E). Rarity 5+ (Pop. ~35). The Virginian Collection (Haynor). The HM-3 plate coin for Classic Gold Coins of 1834-1839. Purchased from Stack's Bowers.

HM-1 (Dies 1-F). Rarity 6 (Pop. ~20). Late die state with iconic "unicorn" obverse die crack above star 5 running down through the hair and ear. The reverse die crack is present but faint. Great-looking coin overall, impaired by a big swipe on the obverse from a wheel encounter. Purchased from Stack's Bowers as NGC 6815399-001.
CAC. HM-2 (Dies 2-F). Rarity 4+ (Pop. ~100). Later die state than the Bass-Haynor coin. Outstanding original color with a great look. One of my favorite Classic fives, despite the low grade. Purchased on eBay.
HM-3 (Dies 2-A). Rarity 4 (Pop. ~130). The 7th and final pairing for Reverse A. Very appealing orange-gold with great luster. Purchased from Stack's Bowers as an AU53 with a nasty case of dental wax. PCGS Restoration did a fantastic job of removing the haze while preserving the underlying color and luster, resulting in an upgrade to AU55.

HM-1 (Dies 1-K). Rarity 4 (Pop. ~100). HM-1 is easily identified by the combination of a Block 8 in the date and an unbroken middle arrow on the reverse. A very pleasing original coin. Purchased on eBay.
HM-2 (Dies 1-L). Rarity 3+ (Pop. ~200). The only usage of Obverse 2 (Block 8 + single forelock) and the first pairing for Reverse L ("broken" arrow). Very appealing crusty coin with lots of original color. Crossed from NGC 4825851-003. Purchased from Stack's Bowers.
CAC. HM-3 (Dies 3-M). Rarity 4 (Pop. ~150). The Script 8 in the date is sufficient to identify HM-3. Brassy greenish-gold overall with extensive deep burgundy in protected areas. Although well-worn, it was clearly quite well-struck from the ample central detail remaining on both sides. Purchased from Russ Augustin.
