The 2001 Silver Buffalo Commemorative Dollar coins now exist thanks to Ben Nighthorse Campbell. Starting in 1995 he had proposed he reintroduction of the Buffalo design on a U.S. coin. His original proposal was to produce a five-cent coin made of silver depicting the historical buffalo design. After five tries and five years later, Campbell's proposal was finally accepted.
